Yes.... interestingly I did a google search and it seems that Ecko in the 
UK sold a recording device that attached to the speaker output of your home
radio to allow you record programs on an embossed disc quite early on.  Is
this possibly it?  Not something I see in the US, but the British origin would
make good sense that this is what they'd be talking about.
