To wrap this up - I've returned the Bluetooth transmitter for a
refund. Testing again on the bench again confirmed a latency of
around 600 ms, making it necessary to turn off either the
Bluetooth speakers or the "direct" speakers, when listening to the
other. Too much running around. <br>

I looked into the availability of low power FM transmitters and I
found a couple for around $80, the next tier around $180
(apparently these are the ones that churches are buying) and then
models for around $500. Even $80 is more than this project is
worth to me, and it would also mean using the 1980s mid-fi system
in the room behind the kitchen, where there's an FM tuner. It
would work, but not well for where I'd be listening. <br>
<br>
At the moment, I'm using the Bluetooth speakers together with an
obsolete table serving as an "Internet radio" and, just to
simplify things, making an analog connection for audio between the
tablet and the speakers rather than Bluetooth. <br>
