<br>You realize, of course, that at least on ampex 200A...440, there is NO CONTROL of erase head azimuth, because ordinarily it makes no difference. So we should have no expectation for where the erase azimuth would be. And I would expect that when you go into normal "record" mode, you would erase the original erase azimuth. So what's that all about?<br>

While I understand that you are capturing both signals during playback (on yet, a different machine), aren't you assuming that the record head & the erase head were in perfect agreement on the original record deck?<br>
That said, having looked at several multitrack heads on several brands of machines with a dual trace scope, when it came to azimuth, I would generally walk away shaking my head. <br>
