Increasing source impedance will always increase LF distortion.  See the plots on page 2 of a typical transformer, where THD is shown for 3 different source impedances.  Seehttps://www.jensen-transformers.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/jt-11-dmcf.pdf.  The core material (and its annealing process) will determine just how low the THD will ever get.
A Jensen data sheet can be quite educational if read carefully ...

Oh, if you want a resonant HF ring, just leave off the termination load.
The 111C was designed to work into a very consistent load and it does
not do well into an open.  

My suspicion is that raising the source impedance will first make for
higher low end distortion but... I never tried it on the bench.
