Thanks for all the advice. Any recommendations on what blanks to buy and 
where?

I'll let you know. It's very nice musically, and interesting from an 
engineering perspective. EU recording engineers had relatively little 
experience with big bands in concert halls, and it shows. There are four 
recordings of the 1956 tour online in streaming format, including this 
one from Berlin. I haven't listened to all of them, but this one suffers 
from poor balance of the sections in the ensemble (very weak saxes, less 
weak bones, some instruments that you don't hear at all), boomy sound on 
the bass instrument, too much room. These four recordings are, however, 
a major improvement from the 1953 tour, when every recording is a train 
wreck of overloaded mics and tape.

I have FLACs made from an LP that is described as being from a 
broadcast. All I plan to do is cool off that bass a bit.
