I'm betting you'll find gas discharge tubes (GDTs) in there. They're well suited to high-speed circuits because of their low capacitance - and they're available at trigger voltages as low 90 V and can handle at least a few thousand amps!

 I'm sure Ethernet officially isolated from ground, but at those voltages you can be sure lightning is going to find a path to ground. I'll have to examine those Furse protection circuits... I wouldn't be surprised to find bypass caps to circuit ground or large resistors (symmetrical).
